Health & Safety Concerns
A floodlit 4G pitch brings serious health and safety concerns for residents and users alike.
Noise Impact
Evening and night matches would bring significant noise disturbance:
- Matches until late evening — games could run until 9pm or later under floodlights
- Amplified crowd noise — synthetic pitches are louder than grass, with more vocal players and spectators
- Car doors, horns, and engines — arrival and departure noise adds to the disturbance
- No quiet hours — residents would have no escape from the noise during evening matches
Light Pollution
Floodlights would transform the park from a dark, peaceful space:
- Light spill — floodlights would shine into nearby homes, affecting sleep and privacy
- Disrupted sleep patterns — bright lights late in the evening would affect residents, children, and wildlife
- Visual intrusion — the park would no longer be a dark sky area
Synthetic Turf Concerns
4G artificial pitches raise additional health questions:
- Microplastics — rubber crumb infill washes into drains and waterways
- Chemical exposure — concerns about PFAS and other chemicals in artificial turf
- Heat retention — artificial turf absorbs and retains heat, becoming dangerously hot in summer
- Injury rates — some studies suggest higher injury rates on artificial surfaces
Public Access
The development would reduce public access to green space:
- Restricted hours — the public park would be unavailable during bookings
- Lost green space — the area would become a private sports facility
- Exclusion zones — safety netting and fencing would further limit access
