Wildlife in Orangefield Park

Orangefield Park is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. This development would destroy their habitat.

A Haven for Biodiversity

Our park is far more than just an open space — it's a thriving ecosystem supporting:

  • 42 species of birds — including songbirds, owls, and migratory species that rely on the park for nesting and feeding
  • Bats — several species of bats use the park for foraging and roosting
  • Newts — protected Common Newts have been spotted in the park's ponds
  • Foxes — foxes den in the park's hedgerows and bushes

What Would Be Lost

A floodlit 4G pitch would fundamentally alter this ecosystem:

  • Light pollution — floodlights would disrupt nocturnal wildlife including bats and owls
  • Habitat destruction — the construction would destroy nesting sites and hedgerows
  • Noise pollution — evening and night matches would disturb nesting birds and wildlife
  • Foot traffic — increased footfall would compact soil and damage sensitive areas

Legal Obligations

Many of these species are legally protected. Common newts are an NI Priority species, and bats are strictly protected under UK law. Any development that harms these species or their habitats could be illegal.
